Six of the biggest wireless carriers (AT&T Mobility, Sprint Nextel Corp., Verizon [Communications] Inc., Alltel Corp., U.S. Cellular Corp., Cellular South Inc. and Virgin Mobile USA L.L.C.) have been targeted with a class action lawsuit in a complaint filed in Mississippi federal court.
The most interesting claim is that those carriers will charge for every received text message, without giving the possibility to their customers to turn off such kind of services. Therefore, customers will have no control over the expense. The message sender will be unaware if the receiving party wants to pay for that message or not.
The lack of competition in the wireless space has allowed a small number of companies to overcharge for their services. It’s unlikely that this kind of lawsuit will solve this situation, but at least it reflects the frustration of the cell phone users.
